Paints

In GRAINGER presented a lot of paints. This building material is indispensable for the construction.

The choice of paint

In addition to good protective characteristics of the paint to paint wooden house needs to have durability otherwise update will have coverage every year or every 2 years. The durability of the coating is affected by not only the paint but also the quality of surface preparation before its application. But we will talk about this later, but for now we will define what paint products are used for painting walls of a wooden house.

Protective equipment for external painting of wooden houses:

  • antiseptic compositions;
  • paint, acrylic-based;
  • paint oil-based;
  • paint based on alkyd;
  • latex paint.

Lifespan on average is from 5 to 10 years. The most durable and are considered to be high-quality acrylic paints – they protect the wood for 10 years. In second place are alkyd paints and various antiseptics – 7 years. Oil paint in stick average of 6 years. But we should take into account that this is only an indicative average figures depending on many factors. The best indicator of the update coverage will be the walls of your home, so once a year, inspect the facade on the subject of redecoration.

Antiseptics, for protection of the house

Antiseptic compounds necessary for the protection of wood against bacteria, fungi and mold. They prevent rotting and decay, thus prolonging the lifespan of wooden buildings. All antiseptics have a liquid consistency, which allows to increase the depth of penetration is 4 to 7 mm.

In addition to protection from mold antiseptics reduce the negative impact of atmospheric effects and create a suitable surface for coating transparent tinting compositions, for example, the stain. The stain itself is also has antiseptic effects, but its main task – the decorative coloring of wood. More information about stain you will find in the article "stain wood: characteristics and application ".

There are glazing and coating of antiseptics. Experts recommend the use of glazing compounds, since they are completely transparent and maintain the natural beauty of the wood. Antiseptic coating opaque (because the name from the word "to cover"), so they hide the wood texture, but it retains its relief. From this we can conclude that if you are planning to cover the front with clear varnish, you need a transparent wood stain, but if you're going to paint it in any color, you can use the cover.

Acrylic paint to cover the house

Acrylic paint has earned popularity through a wide color palette, the ease of operation and excellent performance. They are extremely weather resistance, that is, to protect the wood from moisture, sun, light mechanical damage.

Important point: For painting wooden houses inside and outside need different paint. Inside not that much negative effects, so it is possible to use compounds with not just high protective characteristics. But for painting of the facade is better to buy quality acrylic paint designed specifically for outdoor use (make sure the Bank has proper title).

The important advantage of all acrylic paints in their vapor permeability ability. Why more and more people are returning to traditions and build houses out of wood, ignoring modern concrete materials? Because the wood "breathes", that is, transmits fresh air and removes exhaust, thus providing a constant micro-ventilation of air. In a wooden house is never too stuffy unlike concrete or block buildings. And if the "wall up" the wood on the outside of the airtight material, it is possible to lose a very significant advantage. Acrylic paint did not prevent the tree to make the exchange, but it protects it from moisture.

The paint is very elastic, which allows it to cover even the most complex shapes and does not crack due to natural movements of wood (shrinkage new building, contraction and expansion of wooden elements due to temperature changes). With acrylic it's nice and easy to work because it has almost no smell, the skin does not harm (it is enough to wash off the paint with water). For paint application using brushes, rollers, spray guns. Drying time is very short, and, if necessary, updating of the coating can be carried out without removal of previous layer.

Latex paint to cover the house

Latex paints are generally considered one of the varieties of acrylic, but we decided to allocate them separately. If you go to the store, you will find that they are more expensive than regular acrylic exterior paints, and the reason is higher quality. Latex paint is also called rubber because they have a high elasticity, and when applied will form a dense and opaque layer of film which firmly adheres to the wood and protects it from atmospheric influences.

The main advantage of a paint to its absolute environmental performance – even when hit on the skin it can not cause allergic reactions. It is resistant not only to manifestations of nature (sunlight, rain, hail, Gale-force gusts of wind), but also to various household chemicals, so it is safe to wash in alkaline solutions, keeping the facade clean.

One more thing – after drying, the latex paint forms a very pleasant to the touch texture. It fills all small cracks and chips, therefore ideal for the restoration of the house of the old, but not rotten wood. In commercially available glossy and matte latex paint, so for facades is better to take a matte because the gloss will highlight the smallest surface defects. Glossy paint would look good in a bathroom or kitchen on a perfectly flat and smooth wall.

Oil paint to cover the house

Oil paints are characterized by high weather resistance and have good penetrating ability. You could say they combine the qualities of acrylic compositions and antiseptikov, if not for one significant drawback – they are very slow to dry. Drying time depending on weather conditions can last for a day or more. In the case of the facade is not very convenient, because the wind can raise the dust to "stick" it to uncured paint. The same applies to foliage, insects, etc.

In addition, over time, oil paint fade and lose its glossy sheen, but if you want to use lighter shades, it will be virtually unnoticeable.

Alkyd paints for wooden houses

Alkyd paints were widely used during Soviet times and many still find them the best in their field of application. But for the most part they do not lose popularity because of its low cost. For the facade will need a lot of paint, especially if the house is large, so if your budget for repairs is limited, you can buy alkyd paint. But before you go to the store, you should know about one particular alkyd compositions are not too durable. They dry quickly and are unable to penetrate deep enough into the wood, and therefore over time start to flake off. And if alkyd coating will last 3-5 years, latex is three times longer, and cost will ultimately get about one amount.

Mostly painting works wooden houses alkyd paints are carried out for window frames, door jambs, thresholds and other elements requiring protection from moisture and temperature extremes. By the way, these compounds are able to withstand temperatures up to -30C.
